In landscape design, housing, and remodeling projects, most of the basic measurements are made in linear feet, and therefore two-dimensional area measurements are made in square feet. However, when it comes to purchasing materials to fill three-dimensional spaces, measurements are usually in cubic yards. Concrete for driveways, sand, or gravel for a patio base or soil to fill a retaining wall or ridge seeder, for example, are sold per cubic yard rather than a cubic foot.
There are several ways to calculate the volume of space in cubic yards, but one simple way is to start by calculating the volume in cubic feet, which makes it easy to convert this number to cubic yards. People sometimes describe this process as “converting square feet to cubic yards,” but actually what you are doing is adding a third dimension to the calculation of square feet. This gives a measurement of volume in cubic feet, which can then be easily converted to cubic yards.
For our example, we will assume that we calculate how many cubic meters of concrete we will need for the roadway. But the same type of calculation could be used for almost any type of material used to fill three-dimensional space.
Here's how to do it:
Step 2 Add a third dimension to calculate the volume
Two-dimensional measurements are used to calculate the area, but the volume is a three-dimensional measurement, so now you will need to consider the third dimension - the depth or height of the space. If, for example, we assume that the pad for the site will have a 6-inch layer of concrete, this means that it will be 0.5 feet thick (6 inches is half a foot).
So, now we just need to multiply the area measurement we calculated in step 1 (720 sq. Ft.) By the third measurement (0.5 ft) to calculate that our aisle will use 360 cubic feet of concrete (720 x .5 = 360 cubic feet).
But, as we mentioned earlier, the concrete ordered by readi-mix is sold in a cubic yard, not cubic feet. So, the final step:
Step 3 Convert Cubic Feet to Cubic Yards
This is the hardest part of the whole project, but it’s easy to understand the math if you understand that one cubic yard is a volume of space that is 3 feet on each side. Thus, one cubic yard consists of a volume that is 3 feet x 3 feet x 3 feet or 27 cubic feet. In other words, one cubic yard = 27 cubic feet.
Since there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, the total volume measurement that is made in cubic feet can be converted to cubic yards by simply dividing the cubic meter by 27.
Thus, in our example, a 360-foot driveway would require 13.333 yards of concrete. (360 divided by 27 is 13.333). That's how specific you will need your journey, if your measurements are correct.
