Useful Tips

Using Registry Editor wisely

Despite this, skillful hackers create special programs by which making changes to the registry is available, they are not even stopped by warning developers that incorrect actions in the program will lead to a malfunction of the OS and will need to be reinstalled. The corporation itself embeds applications through which the user has the ability to make edits. Here is such a collapse. What is the registry, how to use it correctly and not suffer, will be described later.

About the registry editor in detail

Working with the windows registry is needed in situations where there is a serious destabilization of the system and the device fails. Therefore, a utility for making changes to the system is included in all versions of Windows.

So, for those who still do not understand, the registry is a kind of repository of OS settings that are set by the developer and user. Files and folders contain information about the installed hardware on the computer and laptop, the required drivers and other elements through which the device works correctly. Everything from the first to the last change made by the user is stored in the control panel and registered in the registry. Here is a preinstalled application (it may not differ significantly depending on the version or edition of the OS):

What is a registry?

The Windows registry is a structured database that stores parameters and information used by the operating system, drivers, services and programs.

The registry consists of sections (in the editor they look like folders), parameters (or keys) and their values (shown on the right side of the registry editor).

To start the registry editor, in any version of Windows (from XP) you can press the Windows + R keys and enter regedit to the Run window.

For the first time launching the editor on the left side, you will see the root sections in which it would be nice to navigate:

HKEY_> In instructions and manuals, section names are often abbreviated to HK + the first letters of the name, for example, you can see such an entry: HKLM / Software, which corresponds to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software.

Where are registry files stored

Registry files are stored on the system drive in the Windows / System32 / Config folder - SAM, SECURITY, SYTEM, and SOFTWARE files contain information from the corresponding sections in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

The data from HKEY_CURRENT_USER is stored in a hidden NTUSER.DAT file in the Users / Username folder on the computer.

Create and modify registry keys and settings

Any actions to create and modify sections and registry values can be performed by accessing the context menu that appears by right-clicking on the section name or in the right pane with values (or by the key itself, if you need to change it.

The registry keys can have values of various types, but most often you have to deal with two of them when editing - this is the REG_SZ string parameter (for setting the path to the program, for example) and the DWORD parameter (for example, for enabling or disabling some system function) .

Favorites in Registry Editor

Even among those who regularly use the registry editor, there are almost no those who use the editor’s Favorites menu item. But in vain - here you can add the most frequently viewed sections. And next time, to go to them do not delve into dozens of section names.

“Download bush” or editing the registry on a computer that does not load

Using the menu item “File” - “Download Hive” in the registry editor, you can download partitions and keys from another computer or hard drive. The most common use case: booting from a LiveCD on a computer that does not boot and fixing registry errors on it.

Note: the “Download bush” item is only active when selecting registry keysHKLM andHKEY_USERS.

Export and import registry keys

If necessary, you can export any registry key, including subkeys, for this, right-click on it and select “Export” in the context menu. The values will be saved in a file with the extension .reg, which is essentially a text file and can be edited using any text editor.

To import values from such a file, you can simply double-click on it or select “File” - “Import” in the menu of the registry editor. Importing values may be necessary in various cases, for example, in order to fix Windows file associations.

Registry cleaning

Many third-party programs, among other functions, offer to clean the registry, which, according to the description, should speed up the computer. I have already written an article on this topic and do not recommend performing such a cleaning. Article: Programs for cleaning the registry - is it worth it to use.

I note that this is not about deleting malware entries in the registry, but about “preventive” cleaning, which in fact does not lead to increased performance, but can lead to system malfunctions.

And where to find detailed information in the smallest details about the windows device?

11/01/2014 at 11:34

I did not quite understand the question. What exactly about a Windows device?

Something went wrong. When working with Excel, namely clicking on an email address in the client database, a message appeared This operation was interrupted due to restrictions imposed on this computer. Contact your system administrator.
I found advice from my neighbors on how to fix this problem:
Check if htmlfile is set for the Default parameter. If not, then right-click on the parameter, select the Modify command, enter htmlfile in the Value field and click OK.
In the registry branches HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT .htm
HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Classes .htm
HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Classes .html
HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Classes .shtml
HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Classes .xht
HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Classes .xhtml
set default htmlfile
My question is as follows. There is no single value in the registry branch, namely: HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Classes .xhtml
I wanted to add, but I don’t know how, tell me if it does not complicate it!
Or not necessary?
I always had the value - Opera (I do not use it). I did not carefully download the driver for bluetooth. I changed the value according to the recommendation and everything worked properly.

Not necessary. In any case, by default in Windows 8.1 (I looked at myself) xhtml is also not associated with any browser or application, that is, this is normal.

Hello! I will ask the opinion of a specialist in Windows 8.1. I am struggling with the Wacom cursor flick problem. It saves only editing the registry values ContactVisualization and GestureVisualization to 0 would be fine. But the next time the system boots up, everything returns, and again you have to climb into the registry to turn off this stupid cursor animation! Help advice please! Is it possible to commit registry changes?

I suspect that a service or Wacom process is automatically starting to change keys. You can, by editing the value in the registry, right-click on it and set permissions (prohibit changes for everyone).

I don’t know what exactly you did, but in a pinch you can restore the laptop using the item in the right pane Change computer settings - update and restore.

Not the first day I already read your various recommendations. I used your advice several times. Loved your site. Everything is described very intelligibly. Thank you so much for that!
On this page about the registry, this question arises.
Previously, on Windows XP in the folder settings - the view tab, there was such an item - "Remember the display settings of each folder."
Now I installed Windows 8.1 and there is no such item in the settings anymore. I’m very used to for a long time that each folder comes off in its place and with its own size.
The network has answers on how to configure this in the registry keys. But all the answers concerned mainly Windows-7 or Vista. With Windows 8.1, this did not work for me. Apparently you need to edit other registry keys.
Could you tell me how to apply this to Windows 8.1
It is desirable of course in more detail.
Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, I have not asked such a question recently. Now I looked and also did not find anything like it ... so my answer is I do not know how to implement this.

12/02/2015 at 10:16

Judging by the search on the Internet no one knows. Very sorry…
But, in any case, thanks for not leaving my question unattended.

Hello. Tell me how you can change the value in the registry. But I need a massive replacement. Example: I want to replace the word “ivanov” with “petrov”. But there are a lot of such records, and manually do it for a long time.

12/19/2015 at 10:55

Hello. Something like this: Regfind ‘ivanov’ -r ‘petrov’
I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the syntax. Search the Internet for information on using the regfind command.
